The Uganda North American Medical Society (UNAMS), in partnership with the Uganda North American Association (UNAA), proudly launched its first-ever health fair to bring vital healthcare services to Ugandans in the diaspora. The landmark event took place on August 30, 2025, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana, during the 37th annual UNAA Convention and Trade Expo.
Led by Dr. Sarah Matovu and Dr. Agnes Nambiro-Kasolo of UNAMS, the health fair was supported by a dedicated team of Ugandan-born volunteer nurses from across the United States. The leadership team also included Mr. Steven Lwasa and Ms. Irene V. Nagitta, whose coordination and organizational support were instrumental in the success of the event.

Dozens of convention attendees benefited from free health screenings for chronic conditions including high blood pressure, diabetes, prostate cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, health education was provided on HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, stress management, sleep hygiene, and preventive wellness practices, etc.
“This is the start of a new chapter in prioritizing the health of Ugandans in the diaspora,” said Dr. Agnes Nambiro-Kasolo, speaking on behalf of UNAMS. “Our goal is to make health fairs a regular feature at every UNAA convention.”

Beyond the UNAA Convention: Ongoing UNAMS Initiatives:
Outside of the annual UNAA events, UNAMS continues its mission through multiple platforms:
- Quarterly webinar series addressing critical health and wellness topics affecting Ugandans in diaspora communities and at home.
- Biannual medical missions to underserved areas in Uganda, providing hands-on care and improving health outcomes.
- International professional conferences supporting career development and knowledge sharing for Ugandan medical professionals worldwide.
- Mentorship programs to uplift and empower future medical professionals
These initiatives ensure that UNAMS remains committed to both immediate healthcare needs and the long-term growth and education of Ugandan medical communities locally and globally.

Looking Ahead
UNAMS and UNAA plan to make the health fair a recurring feature at future conventions and trade expos, creating a consistent platform for health education, preventive screenings, and community wellness outreach.
